Since the year 1983, then the Dean of College of Science and Engineering Rev. Fr. Frank Budenholzer SVD and the Director of Computer Center Rev. Fr. John Koster SVD started promoting as well as made lot of effort to begin the Dept. of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE).
Finally, with the renewed effort by the preparatory committee consisted of Rev. Fr. Frank Budenholzer, Prof. Chang kang and Prof. Hwang wen-Jiav with the approval of the MOE, formally it was established in the year 1988.
In order to establish the Dept of CSIE, it took five years of careful planning and seeking the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and as a result, it was officially inaugurated in the year 1988. Following years after the establishment of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering was founded by accepting the first batch of vibrant and energetic young students who were enrolled in the month of October of the same year. In the year 1996, MOE approved the department’s request to start the graduate program in CSIE. In the year 2000, the department had formally started two sections for the undergraduate students. In the year 2003, graduate program for the working students was begun. Since the establishment of the department until today, with regard to the faculty, equipment, and environment, it has provided the best and competitive one in Taiwan.

Motto and objectives of the Dept. of CSIE:
During the bachelor’s degree, the goal is to promote and motivate the students to understand the basic theory of Mathematics, train them to think, analyze, to reason, and to acquire the skills to express and to be creative. During the graduate program, prepare the students in active involvement in the National level technological development and continue to acquire skills and training to develop their talents. Besides, strengthen their knowledge and research capabilities and to prepare for the National technological advancement and research as promoted by the national higher education.
